Germany Faces Rising Hybrid Threats Amid Expanding Counter-Drone Research Initiatives
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warns of foreign hybrid attacks and announces new UAV defense technology center.
Germany is increasingly targeted by hybrid warfare tactics emanating from abroad, according to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. In recent remarks, he highlighted ongoing espionage, cyberattacks, and covert operations aimed at politically and socially destabilizing the country.
Hybrid Threats and Expanded UAV Defense Efforts
Speaking in an interview, Dobrindt emphasized that although Germany is not at war, it faces daily hybrid threats designed to undermine its institutions and public trust. "The strategic goal of foreign states is to subordinate us politically and socially," he stated, without specifying which nations were involved.
Prompted by incidents involving drones equipped with explosives, such as the recent attack attempt at Leipzig/Halle Airport, the German government is intensifying its counter-UAV research. Dobrindt announced the establishment of a new technological center in partnership with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) at a test airfield in Saxony-Anhalt. This center aims to develop innovative technologies for detecting and neutralizing unmanned aerial threats.
"The arms race in drone technology requires us to develop our own research units to keep pace with global advancements," said Dobrindt.
The government’s response includes deploying advanced radar systems like EchoShield at critical infrastructure sites. This system, installed at Leipzig/Halle Airport following the explosive drone incident, can detect and track drones over long distances, enhancing early warning capabilities.
On August 5, an unidentified drone carrying explosives was found near a Ukrainian Antonov An-124 aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The drone was neutralized before detonation, but flight operations were subsequently restricted, leading to a collision with a second unidentified object during an attempted landing.
US intelligence reportedly suspects the drone incident is linked to the Russian government, highlighting the geopolitical dimensions of these hybrid threats. A report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies found at least 144 suspicious drone sightings across 13 European countries between August 2024 and February 2026, signaling a broader regional challenge.
Experts warn these developments may be part of a larger strategy by Russia to test NATO’s readiness to defend its member states against a spectrum of hybrid and conventional attacks, including cyber intrusions and potential military incursions.
