Russian Airstrikes on Kramatorsk Result in Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Damage
A series of Russian air raids on Kramatorsk and nearby Belenkoye caused one death, 15 injuries, and significant property damage.
On the evening of August 13, Russian armed forces launched a series of airstrikes targeting the city of Kramatorsk and the adjacent urban-type settlement of Belenkoye in Ukraine's Donetsk region. Preliminary reports indicate the use of aerial bombs, resulting in one confirmed fatality and at least 15 injuries.
Vadim Filashkin, head of the regional military administration, reported that eight separate strikes occurred between 8:30 pm and 8:56 pm local time. According to initial assessments, residential areas in Kramatorsk sustained direct hits, including damage to a multi-story apartment building. Emergency responders are still verifying the extent of destruction and potential casualties under the debris.
"In Kramatorsk, impacts were recorded in residential neighborhoods, with one multi-apartment building damaged; further information on other destruction is being clarified," said Filashkin.
Video footage from the incident site shows a partial collapse of a nine-story building and active fires. There is concern that people may be trapped under the rubble, necessitating ongoing search and rescue operations.
Context of Repeated Attacks and Impact on Civilians
Kramatorsk, located near the frontline, has frequently been subjected to Russian aerial bombardment. On July 31, four aerial bombs were dropped on the city, resulting in one death and 11 injuries. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported fires covering an area of 685 square meters following those strikes.
Additionally, a day prior, Russian forces targeted the city with five FAB bombs, one of which hit a residential high-rise, causing a fire that injured six people. Earlier, on the night of July 20, Kramatorsk was shelled six times, once again damaging residential zones and causing casualties including one fatality.
These recurrent attacks highlight not only the ongoing humanitarian toll but also the destruction of residential infrastructure, which complicates the region's economic recovery and stability.
