Russian Blogger Ilya Remeslo Detained Amid Legal Case Over Military 'Fake News'

Russian blogger Ilya Remeslo, once known for his pro-government stance and activity against opposition figures, has been placed in pretrial detention at Moscow's SIZO No. 7 following a psychiatric evaluation connected to a criminal case alleging dissemination of "fake news" about the Russian armed forces.

Remeslo was held at the Serbsky Institute of Psychiatry from late July for a court-ordered psychological and psychiatric examination. Details of the findings have not been publicly disclosed. He will remain in detention at least until September 16, pending court proceedings at the Basmanny District Court of Moscow. If convicted, he faces up to ten years of imprisonment.

Background and Political Shift

Previously a member of Russia's Public Chamber, Remeslo was primarily known for his role as an informant against opposition activists, notably targeting Alexei Navalny and the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK). His denunciations contributed to criminal investigations into Navalny’s 2017 presidential campaign finances and other legal actions against the opposition leader.

In a striking reversal in March 2026, Remeslo publicly denounced President Vladimir Putin and the war against Ukraine via posts on his Telegram channel. He accused Putin of usurping power, delegitimizing his presidency, and labeled him a "war criminal and thief."

Shortly after these posts, Remeslo was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, reportedly influenced by his sister. Upon discharge, he gave an interview reaffirming his critical stance towards the Kremlin and declaring himself the head of Russia's opposition movement.

"I do not renounce my previous statements and intend to continue criticizing the Russian authorities," Remeslo said in the interview.

Portions of this interview were utilized as evidence in the criminal proceedings. Remeslo was detained in mid-July in Saint Petersburg and subsequently sent to the Serbsky Institute for evaluation as part of the ongoing investigation.

Serbsky Institute's Controversial Legacy

The Serbsky Institute is recognized for conducting forensic psychiatric assessments but also bears a historic association with punitive psychiatry during the Soviet era. It was infamous for diagnosing dissenters with "sluggish schizophrenia," thereby suppressing political opposition under the guise of medical treatment. Prominent Soviet-era critics such as Vladimir Bukovsky and Valeriya Novodvorskaya were among its victims.

Remeslo's detention and psychiatric examination thus echo a contentious legacy of handling political dissent through judicial and medical means, highlighting ongoing tensions in Russia's legal and political spheres.
