Trump Criticizes Biden Administration for Depleting US Ammo Stocks Amid Ukraine Aid

Former US President Donald Trump has criticized the Biden administration for depleting American ammunition stockpiles in its efforts to support Ukraine amid ongoing conflict. Speaking at a White House briefing on August 6, Trump asserted that when he left office, US arsenals were fully stocked, but large quantities of ammunition have since been transferred to Kyiv.
"Biden handed over $300 billion worth of ammunition to [Ukrainian President] Zelensky," Trump said. "When I left, everything was stocked, and he distributed a very large portion. Now we are replenishing these supplies and using very powerful and good ammunition that we wouldn’t have used otherwise."
Concerns Over Missile Transfers and US Defense Readiness
When asked whether the United States planned to provide Ukraine with additional interceptor missiles for the Patriot surface-to-air missile systems or long-range missiles urgently needed by the Ukrainian military, Trump responded, "We need those missiles ourselves."
Despite these concerns, Trump emphasized that the US Armed Forces remain in "good shape," possessing sufficient weaponry—though perhaps not the most modern—that is still effective.
"We have enough armaments, maybe not the newest but equally effective," Trump said.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly highlighted the severe shortage of interceptor missiles crucial for Patriot systems. After a night of intense missile strikes by Russia on Kyiv on August 1, during which 35 missiles were launched—including 27 ballistic missiles—Ukraine’s air defenses managed to intercept only one. Zelensky urged international partners to understand that these weapons are urgently needed on the front lines, not stockpiled for hypothetical future scenarios.
"It is very important that partners hear that these means are needed here and now to deter and stop the Russian war in Ukraine," Zelensky stated.
The depletion of US missile stockpiles underscores the challenges faced by the Biden administration in balancing domestic defense readiness with commitments to international allies in the ongoing conflict.
