During this visit, all 100 members of the U.S. Senate have been invited to attend a meeting with Zelensky, highlighting the high-level engagement between the U.S. and Ukraine amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The meeting is set for 6:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday at the U.S. Capitol, according to multiple congressional sources. This gathering underscores a bipartisan effort in the Senate to address sanctions against Russia, a legislative initiative that Senator Graham helped develop before his recent passing.
Senate to Vote on Russia Sanctions During Zelensky's Visit
One of the key financial and geopolitical issues on the agenda is a bill to strengthen sanctions against Russia. The Senate is expected to commence voting on this sanctions package during Zelensky’s visit. Senator Lindsey Graham, a staunch supporter of Ukraine, met with Zelensky in Kyiv on July 10, marking one of his last official engagements.
"Now is the time to end the war," a White House representative said ahead of meetings discussing the current peace process between Russia and Ukraine.
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly supported the sanctions legislation. Furthermore, he has requested that the bill include expanded restrictions targeting Iran and the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, reflecting an integrated approach to U.S. foreign policy sanctions.
On July 28, Trump is scheduled to meet separately with Zelensky and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Discussions with Netanyahu will focus on progress in negotiations with Lebanon and efforts to expand the Abraham Accords — agreements aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and several Muslim-majority nations.
According to White House sources, the meeting between Trump and Zelensky will also address the peace process between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing the urgency of ending the conflict.
Additional reports indicate that Ukrainian and U.S. officials have been exploring the possibility of proposing a ceasefire in the airspace as part of a broader package of potential conditions to halt the war in Ukraine.
