On August 16, hundreds of protesters gathered in Kyiv and several other Ukrainian cities, demanding the reinstatement of Mykhailo Fedorov as the head of the Ministry of Defense. This marks the 32nd consecutive day of demonstrations calling for leadership changes within Ukraine's defense sector.

Widespread Demonstrations and Leadership Discontent

The protest began at the Freedom Arch in central Kyiv, formerly known as the Arch of Friendship, before participants marched along Khreshchatyk Street, the Alley of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, and Olhynska Street. The march culminated in a rally at Ivan Franko Square, near the Presidential Office. The protest column stretched for several hundred meters through the city center, drawing a diverse crowd with a notable presence of youth.

“Fedorov!”, “Umerov is a devil!”, “Veteran, not Kim!”, and “Don’t interfere with Misha in military matters” were among the slogans chanted by demonstrators.

Protesters voiced strong opposition to recent appointments by President Volodymyr Zelensky, particularly criticizing the nomination of former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov as head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, and Vitaliy Kim, ex-head of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, as Minister for Veterans Affairs.

Similar protests were reported in other major cities including Lviv, Dnipro, Lutsk, Rivne, Poltava, Odesa, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernivtsi, indicating nationwide unrest over defense and government leadership decisions.

Petitions and Calls for Reform Continuation

In Kyiv, protesters formally submitted a petition to a representative of the Presidential Office. The document demands the continuation of reforms initiated under Mykhailo Fedorov's leadership in the Ministry of Defense and urges government authorities to engage in open dialogue with civil society.

One of the protest organizers, veteran Dmytro Kozyatynskyi, highlighted the ongoing challenges in Ukraine’s government structure, emphasizing that key ministerial positions—including the defense and foreign affairs ministries—remain unfilled.

The demonstrations underscore public frustration with recent administrative decisions amid a critical period for Ukraine’s defense and governance. Investors and analysts monitoring Ukraine’s political stability and institutional reforms may find these developments significant, as leadership vacuums and public dissent can impact governance effectiveness and economic confidence.
