Lufthansa to Cancel 20,000 Flights Through October 2026 to Cut Fuel Costs

The German airline aims to save over 40,000 tons of aviation fuel amid energy crisis by reducing less profitable routes and retiring older aircraft.

German flagship carrier Lufthansa has announced plans to cancel 20,000 flights between June and October 2026 as part of a strategic effort to reduce aviation fuel consumption amid ongoing energy market volatility. The decision, disclosed on April 21, reflects the airline's response to the fuel cost pressures stemming from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Strategic Flight Reductions and Fuel Savings

The cancellations, already underway for flights scheduled through May 31, are expected to save the airline over 40,000 tons of jet fuel. Lufthansa noted that this fuel economy will come with less than a one percentage point drop in available seat-kilometers (ASK), a key efficiency metric measuring available seats multiplied by flight distance.

This minimal impact on operational capacity is attributed to Lufthansa's plan to cut less profitable short-haul routes primarily from its Frankfurt and Munich hubs while expanding services from Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels hubs. The airline’s sixth hub in Rome will also see adjustments in flight schedules.

"We are optimizing our network by reducing unprofitable regional routes while enhancing flights from other key European hubs to maintain operational efficiency despite reduced flight numbers," Lufthansa representatives stated.

Initial flight cancellations include 120 daily flights removed as of April 20, affecting routes such as Frankfurt to Bydgoszcz and Rzeszów in Poland, as well as Stavanger in Norway.

Fleet Retirement and Long-Haul Adjustments

In a parallel move to combat rising fuel expenses, Lufthansa accelerated the retirement of 27 aging Canadair CRJ aircraft operated by its loss-making subsidiary CityLine. These aircraft have reached their operational limits, and their decommissioning was expedited due to escalating fuel costs and labor disputes.

The airline also revealed plans to retire four Airbus A340-600 and two Boeing 747-400 long-haul aircraft by October 2026. Additionally, Lufthansa intends to reduce its overall available seat-kilometers for its main brand during the winter season, further calibrating capacity to demand and fuel consumption constraints.

Industry-Wide Responses to Energy Crisis

Lufthansa is not alone in adjusting operations amid the energy crisis exacerbated by the Middle East conflict. Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is set to cancel approximately 1,000 flights in April, while Air France-KLM has introduced a fuel surcharge of up to 100 euros on some long-haul tickets, including previously sold seats. Moldovan carrier FlyOne has also announced flight cancellations due to fuel challenges.

European regulators are expected to address the broader energy issues with a proposed plan from the European Commission scheduled for April 22, aimed at mitigating the crisis’s impact on the aviation sector and other energy-dependent industries.
