Russia’s Attacks on Ukraine on July 2 Result in Multiple Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Damage
Continued Russian strikes across several Ukrainian regions caused fatalities, injuries, and damage to critical infrastructure on July 2, 2024.

Overview of July 2 Attacks Across Ukrainian Regions
On July 2, following the deadliest nighttime assault on Kyiv since the onset of the conflict, Russia continued its offensive by targeting multiple regions in Ukraine throughout the day and evening. These strikes inflicted civilian casualties and extensive damage to infrastructure in key areas including Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Donetsk.
Authorities reported both fatalities and injuries, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian and economic toll of the conflict. The attacks disrupted civilian life, damaged residential buildings, commercial facilities, and essential services, which will have consequential impacts on regional economies and recovery efforts.
Casualties and Damages by Region
"Approximately 40 strikes involving drones, artillery, aerial bombs, and missiles were launched against Dnipropetrovsk, resulting in multiple casualties and significant property damage." — Regional Administration Official
Kherson: A 41-year-old man was killed in a strike on a civilian vehicle. Additionally, a 63-year-old doctor died from injuries sustained during an attack on a medical facility, while a nurse was wounded. Another local resident died in an explosion while mowing grass, highlighting the dangers posed by unexploded ordnance. Drone raids, including one near the Kherson oil refinery, persisted until late evening.
Zaporizhzhia: Strikes hit a residential building, a commercial warehouse, a postal sorting center, and a sports facility. Seven people were injured, among them children aged six, seven, twelve, and sixteen, indicating the civilian vulnerability to these assaults.
Dnipropetrovsk: The region experienced around 40 strikes through a combination of drones, artillery, aerial bombs, and a missile attack. The casualties included two fatalities, one of whom was a seven-year-old girl, and nine injured civilians, including children aged 11 and 14. Structural damage affected multi-family and private homes, a gymnasium, and vehicles.
Mykolaiv: A drone strike on a gas station area caused one death and injured seven others. The attack destroyed one gas station building and damaged private residences and vehicles.
Kharkiv: A multi-story residential building was struck, injuring three people, alongside damage to a fueling station and several cars.
Sumy: Attacked with three guided aerial bombs, the city reported eleven injuries, including three children. A school sustained significant damage but was unoccupied by students at the time. Two staff members were injured. Additional casualties resulted from a drone strike targeting a postal vehicle.
Donetsk (Kramatorsk): One individual was injured following a drone attack on a vehicle.
Financial and Economic Implications
The sustained attacks on civilian infrastructure and residential areas exacerbate the economic challenges faced by Ukraine. Damage to fuel stations, postal sorting centers, schools, and residential buildings disrupts essential services and supply chains, impeding local economic activity and reconstruction efforts.
Investor confidence and regional economic stability may be further affected by the ongoing conflict dynamics, with potential impacts on capital inflows, insurance costs, and operational risks for businesses operating within these affected zones.
The frequency and scale of the attacks also imply increasing security expenditures for local administrations, diverting resources from development and social programs. These factors collectively highlight the pressing need for comprehensive strategies to manage both humanitarian consequences and economic resilience amid continued hostilities.
