UK Plans to Join EU’s €90 Billion Loan Program to Support Ukraine’s Military Needs
London to announce negotiations with EU on joining loan program aimed at expanding financial aid and defense contracts for Ukraine.

The United Kingdom intends to collaborate with the European Union to extend financial support to Ukraine, with an official announcement expected on May 4 during the European Political Community summit in Yerevan.
According to a statement from the British Prime Minister's office, the UK is preparing to join the EU's €90 billion loan program for Ukraine, covering the years 2026-2027. The program was approved in April following Hungary’s veto lift. The UK plans to initiate formal negotiations with the EU on this matter at the upcoming summit.
Financial and Strategic Implications for UK and EU
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that UK participation will broaden financial support for Ukraine and help secure access to crucial military equipment. This collaboration is also anticipated to create significant opportunities for the UK defense industry by opening doors for British companies to engage in contracts supplying military products to Kyiv.
"In uncertain times, we need to move further and faster on defense to ensure the security of our people," Starmer stated, highlighting the mutual benefits of UK-EU cooperation.
The joint effort between London and Brussels is framed as a strategic move that benefits all parties involved by reinforcing military capabilities and contributing to regional stability.
Beyond financial measures, the UK government announced plans to impose a new package of stringent sanctions against Russian companies later this week. These sanctions aim to disrupt supply chains related to military production, continuing the UK's strong stance against Russia since the onset of the war in 2022.
This decision aligns with the UK’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine through both economic measures and defense initiatives, reflecting a broader strategy to counter Russian aggression in the region.
