Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on June 8 described a phone conversation with US special envoys Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner as "very positive". Zelensky expressed gratitude for their readiness to actively engage in diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

"A very positive conversation. Grateful for the willingness to work intensely in the coming weeks to kickstart diplomacy for the resolution of Russia's war against Ukraine," Zelensky wrote on social media platform X.

During the call, Zelensky informed the envoys about intelligence Kyiv holds regarding Moscow's intentions. He also praised their respect for Ukrainians and their positive assessment of Ukraine’s positions. "Thank you, America!" he added.

Context of Diplomatic Engagements

The phone call took place while Zelensky was briefly stopped at Chisinau Airport returning to Kyiv from London, where he held high-level meetings with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron. These leaders agreed on five conditions for a durable peace in Ukraine and discussed measures to increase pressure on the Russian economy, ramp up military aid to Ukraine, and collaborate on missile production for air defense and long-range strikes.

On June 4, Zelensky publicly released an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin proposing an end to the war and suggesting a clear date for a personal meeting between the two leaders. He emphasized that other parties, including Europe and the US, could join this bilateral track.

In response, Putin dismissed the letter the following day, stating he "does not see the point" in a meeting at this time. He criticized the letter as containing "elements of rudeness" and said it created obstacles to a possible encounter. Putin reaffirmed that military operations will eventually conclude only when Russia achieves its objectives, and urged Russian troops to "work, brothers."

This dialogue with US envoys linked to former President Donald Trump reflects ongoing efforts to mobilize international diplomatic support amid the conflict’s enduring economic and military strain. Investor and financial communities closely watch these political developments as they could influence economic sanctions, defense spending, and regional stability affecting markets.

While the war’s trajectory remains uncertain, the recent diplomatic interactions underscore Ukraine’s persistent engagement with multiple international stakeholders to secure peace and strengthen its defense capabilities.
