EU and US Criticize Israel for Controversial Video Involving Detained Activists
Israel faces diplomatic backlash from Western nations over video showing treatment of pro-Palestinian activists detained during Gaza flotilla interception.

Israel has come under severe diplomatic criticism from the European Union and the United States following the publication of a video showing detained pro-Palestinian activists from the "Sumud" flotilla. The footage, posted by Israel's Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, depicts activists with their hands bound behind their backs, kneeling with heads bowed, while Ben-Gvir walks among them waving an Israeli flag and shouting in Hebrew.
International Diplomatic Repercussions
The video was widely condemned as humiliating and unacceptable treatment of detainees. On May 20, several Western countries, including Italy, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Portugal summoned Israeli ambassadors to express their concerns. Spain, currently without an Israeli ambassador, summoned the Israeli chargé d'affaires.
Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, responding to the video, stated that such treatment of detainees, including Polish nationals, was unacceptable. "In a democratic world, detainees must not be subjected to cruel treatment or humiliation," Sikorski wrote on social media, demanding justice for Polish citizens.
The EU’s official spokesperson for foreign affairs, Anuar El-Anuni, described the treatment as "completely unacceptable," emphasizing that every detainee must be treated with safety and dignity in strict compliance with international law. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas called the behavior "humiliating and unacceptable," criticizing Ben-Gvir’s conduct as unworthy of any democratic office holder.
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Hakaabi described the flotilla activists' attempt to reach Gaza as a "foolish stunt" but condemned Ben-Gvir’s actions, saying he "betrayed the dignity of his nation." Similarly, Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul labeled Ben-Gvir’s behavior "absolutely unacceptable," highlighting that it fundamentally contradicts the values Germany and Israel jointly uphold. The German ambassador in Israel, Steffen Seibert, echoed this assessment.
"Ben-Gvir’s deliberate actions have harmed the state and undermined the efforts of many professionals, from IDF soldiers to Foreign Ministry staff." – Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar
Israel’s own Foreign Minister Gideon Saar publicly reprimanded Ben-Gvir on social media for damaging Israel’s reputation and negating the professional efforts of security and diplomatic personnel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged Israel’s right to prevent provocative flotillas from approaching Gaza through Israeli waters but stated that Ben-Gvir’s treatment of the activists "does not reflect Israeli values."
Background on the Sumud Flotilla Incident
The Sumud flotilla departed from Marmaris, Turkey, on May 14 and was intercepted by the Israeli Navy on May 18 in international waters approximately 250 nautical miles from Gaza. Organizers report that 428 individuals from over 40 countries were detained. This incident marks the latest attempt to breach Israel’s maritime blockade of the Gaza Strip. A previous flotilla, which included activist Greta Thunberg, was stopped in October 2025.
Israeli authorities have repeatedly declared their intent to prevent maritime breaches of the Gaza blockade, viewing such attempts as supporting Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group designated as a terrorist organization by both the EU and the US.
From a financial and investor relations perspective, this diplomatic incident and the resulting tensions could affect Israel’s foreign relations and potentially influence economic partnerships and investments, especially with European countries. The political fallout may also impact security expenditures and government resource allocations amid ongoing regional conflicts.
