Latvian Defense Minister Resigns Following Drone Airspace Breach Incident
Latvia’s Defense Minister Andris Spruds steps down amid controversy over unauthorized drone incursions linked to Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds has resigned in the wake of a recent incident involving two drones that violated Latvia’s airspace, an event that has raised concerns about national security and military oversight. The drones, believed to be Ukrainian and deviating from their intended routes, entered Latvia’s airspace from the Russian border area.
Incident Sparks Political Fallout and Security Concerns
The incident occurred on the night of May 7, when two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) intruded into Latvian airspace. One drone crashed on the premises of a petroleum refinery in the city of Rēzekne. Authorities are investigating the incident, which is understood to have involved Ukrainian drones targeting objectives in Russia but inadvertently crossing into Latvian territory.
In response to the event, Minister Spruds announced his resignation, citing the need to protect the Latvian armed forces from becoming embroiled in political disputes. "I have decided to step down as Minister of Defense to shield the Latvian military from being dragged into a political campaign," Spruds stated. He emphasized that unauthorized drones must not threaten public safety.
Latvia’s Prime Minister, Evika Siliņa, expressed a loss of confidence in the Defense Minister following the incident. She called for his resignation, noting that recent drone breaches had demonstrated shortcomings in military leadership and the failure to uphold commitments to airspace security.
"The recent drone incidents revealed that the country's military leadership could not keep the promises of safe skies," Prime Minister Siliņa remarked.
The episode has highlighted complex challenges for Latvia’s defense policy amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Ukraine, now in its fifth year of resisting a full-scale Russian invasion, has increasingly employed UAV strikes targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure. These operations have occasionally resulted in airspace violations beyond Ukrainian borders, including prior incursions into Finland's and other Baltic states' airspace.
Estonia's Defense Minister, Hanno Pevkur, has called for Ukraine to implement more effective controls over its UAV operations to prevent unintended violations of allied airspace.
Implications for Defense and Investor Confidence
From a financial and governance perspective, the resignation of a defense minister amid rising regional tensions can influence investor perceptions and the stability of public institutions. Latvia's commitment to maintaining stringent airspace security is critical for sustaining investor confidence, especially in sectors like energy and infrastructure vulnerable to geopolitical risks.
Defense budgets and government expenditures on military technology and surveillance are likely to come under increased scrutiny as policymakers seek to reinforce airspace monitoring capabilities and prevent future breaches. Ensuring transparent communication regarding defense strategy and incident investigations will be essential in reassuring both domestic and international stakeholders about Latvia’s security posture.
