In a 25-minute national address broadcast overnight on July 17, former U.S. President Donald Trump accused China of conducting a large-scale operation to interfere in the 2020 presidential elections. He revealed declassified intelligence indicating that Chinese authorities accessed comprehensive data on approximately 220 million American voters.

Details of the Alleged Data Breach and Election Interference

Trump described the operation as potentially the largest data leak in election history, involving the acquisition of sensitive voter information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, party affiliations, and additional personal details. According to his statement, these data were either purchased, stolen, or obtained through hacking.

Highlighting vulnerabilities in the U.S. electoral system, Trump also pointed to around 278,000 individuals registered to vote in four states who allegedly lack U.S. citizenship. He accused Chinese agents of exploiting these weaknesses to influence the 2020 election results, which saw Trump lose to Democrat Joe Biden.

"China tried to secure my defeat by replacing legitimate votes and bribing journalists to publish negative stories about me," stated Trump. He further claimed that Beijing paid substantial sums for increasing negative media coverage.

"China paid huge amounts of money for even more negative coverage about me," Trump said during his address.

Trump emphasized that the motive behind China's interference stemmed from his administration's plans to impose multibillion-dollar tariffs on China and to build the "strongest military in the world." He warned that other foreign adversaries, including Russia, Iran, North Korea, and certain non-state actors, could exploit similar electoral vulnerabilities.

Calls for Investigation and Accountability

Trump accused elements within the U.S. intelligence community, which he referred to as the "deep state," of suppressing and downplaying the scope of China’s election meddling. He alleged that relevant information was deliberately withheld from both the President and the American public.

Addressing the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the CIA, Trump demanded a thorough investigation into how and why these critical details were concealed. He called for the dismissal of officials responsible for the cover-up and urged prosecution where warranted.

The former President's remarks add another layer to the ongoing debates over election security, foreign interference, and the transparency of intelligence disclosures. Investors and policymakers may watch closely as the accusations potentially impact U.S.-China relations and domestic political dynamics.
