The United States is contemplating the relocation of a portion of its troops currently stationed in Germany to Poland, signaling a notable shift in its military posture in Europe. President Donald Trump acknowledged the possibility of such a move during a press interaction on May 8, underscoring the strong bilateral ties between Washington and Warsaw.

Strategic and Political Dynamics Behind Troop Repositioning

President Trump responded affirmatively when asked about the potential transfer of American forces from Germany to Poland, stating, "Poland would like that. We have excellent relations with Poland, and I have a great relationship with President Karol Nawrocki. I support them. I like him very much. So it is possible." This statement aligns with recent developments following the US Department of Defense’s order to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany within the year.

The troop withdrawal was ordered by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and reflects ongoing tensions between the US and Germany, particularly after disagreements with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Trump had previously indicated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Washington was considering reducing its contingent in Germany.

One point of contention has been Germany’s criticism of the US and Israel’s military actions against Iran since February 28, resulting in the White House’s refusal to host a Tomahawk missile-equipped battalion in Germany. The Tomahawk missiles have a flight range of up to 2,500 kilometers, highlighting their strategic significance.

According to Pentagon data, approximately 68,000 US military personnel were stationed on European bases as of December 2025, with about 36,400 located in Germany. The US maintains around 20 military installations across Germany, primarily in its southern and southwestern regions.

President Karol Nawrocki of Poland emphasized Warsaw’s readiness to host some of the troops withdrawn from Germany during his visit to Lithuania in early May. "We have the necessary infrastructure for this," Nawrocki stated, signaling Poland’s strategic ambition to strengthen its defense cooperation with the US.

Similarly, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda expressed willingness to accommodate additional American forces, noting that Lithuania currently hosts over 1,000 US troops, while Poland’s contingent stands at around 10,000 soldiers.

"We have the necessary infrastructure to support the relocated troops," said President Karol Nawrocki, reflecting Poland’s preparedness to enhance its military partnership with the United States.

This potential redeployment reflects broader geopolitical recalibrations within NATO and US defense policy in Europe, balancing strategic interests amid shifting alliances and regional security challenges.
